Natural Environment

Weather and Climate

  • The climate (cold/hot temperatures, clear/rainy weather, dryness/humidity) varies depending on temperature, atmospheric pressure, sunlight, snow, rain, clouds, and wind, and is also impacted by the latitude, altitude, and topography of the region.
  • Uiseong-gun belongs to the Yeongnam region of Korea, and is surrounded by the two large mountain ranges, Taebaek Mountains and Sobaek Mountains, which shelter the county from the wind. Also, since Uiseong sits in an inland basin, it is less affected by the continental climate, which results in severe temperature swings.
  • Looking at national weather forecasts, Uiseong-sun is often the hottest place in summer and the coldest place in winter.
  • Uiseong-gun has few overcast or cloudy days and it gets little precipitation. Overall, it is considered a cool and dry region that gets plenty of sunlight. The first frost and ice come to Uiseong earlier than in other regions, and this cold weather lasts longer, resulting in a much lengthier winter.
  • Although meteorological data is unavailable, building the nearby Andong Dam and Imha Dam has increased the number of foggy days in Uiseong. Moreover, locals report much colder temperatures in winter. Meanwhile, small pockets of hail fall frequently in summer as well.
  • Geumseongsan Mountain in Geumseong-myeon is a dormant volcano. A volcanic eruption in the past also created the smaller mountains near Geumseongsan Mountain.

Temperature

  • The average annual temperature across Uiseong-gun was 10.4℃ in 1995 and 11℃ in 1996. The average temperature for the past 25 years is 11℃.
  • Korea’s average annual temperature is lower in inland areas than in coastal areas. If you look at the isotherm line for 11℃ in Korea, it runs from Goseong-gun in Gangwon-do to Yangpyeong-gun and Gapyeong-gun in Gyeonggi-do, and then it turns north to Kaesong.
  • Latitude-wise, Uiseong-gun is the same as Daejeon at the 12℃ line, but its temperature is 1℃ lower.
  • In terms of extreme temperatures since meteorological observations began in 1972, the temperature in Uiseong went to as low as -23.3℃ in 1981, and as high as 38.5℃ in 1994. The difference is a whopping 61.8℃. The lowest average temperature in January was -7.8℃ in 1981, whereas the highest temperature in July was 27.8℃ in 1994 (difference of 35.6℃).
  • Uiseong-gun has a low average annual temperature, it is cold in winter and hot in summer, with large annual and daily temperature fluctuations.

Precipitation

  • Precipitation is influenced by air masses and fronts, and Uiseong-gun is a dry region with very little precipitation across the country due to topographical influences - the county sits in a basin sandwiched between the Taebaek Mountains and Sobaek Mountains.
  • The average number of rainy days per year is 92. Observations from 1972 to 1996 (25 years) reveal that the year with the highest annual precipitation was 1,290.8mm in 1972, and the year with the lowest annual precipitation was 505.1mm in 1994. The average precipitation is only 961.5mm, which is much less than the national average of 1,200~1,300mm.
